After travelling from Paris to Portugal to Greece and to Poland, I realized that I can never be a true blue backpacker. I don’t mind staying in hostels and sharing a room with total strangers, it’s definitely cheaper and also a good way to meet and interact with travellers, but I just can’t stand sometimes the messy ones, especially in the toilets. Argh. In hostel dorms you learn to be courteous and respectful of others.
Backpacking is also about finding the cheapest flight possible and that means going to the airport in ungodly hours or having a lot of stopovers, or sleeping and waiting in the airport for hours. I’ve done this before but if possible, I don’t like this kind of hassle. So if I can afford it and need to pay a little more to be a bit more comfortable, I will do it.
Sometimes when you’ve been backpacking for so long, you need to save money and eat the cheapest meals possible. Cheap food doesn’t of course mean it’s bad food, but I love to eat, food makes me happy, and if spending a little more and trying the local specialty, I would happily spend. On the latter part of my trip, I was getting tired of the hostels breakfast and eating outside wasn’t that expensive, so I opted to eat out where the locals are and sit under the sun and watch the world go by.
On this european adventure, I also realized that …
A smile can go a long way. I wasn’t really conscious about my smile but that’s one of the first thing that people I met here noticed. Bringing comfortable shoes is the only way to go. I brought with me this killer boots that also killed my feet. I did a lot of walking on this trip, comfy and still stylish shoes is a must! Churches and museums are good places to rest and take cover from the heat or the rain. Lipad my i-pad is a solo traveller’s best friend, haha. I don’t have a good camera phone so my i-pad does its job in providing the obligatory travel selfies. I can always ask other people to take my picture but sometimes I don’t want to bother anybody. Trust your instincts. I’m grateful that nothing bad happened to me on this trip. I always follow my gut-feel and because of this I met some really amazing individuals that became my friends. Solo travel can get lonely, but nothing like an ice cream or a happy meal can’t fix ;p It’s okay to not have an itinerary. As a solo traveller, I am in charge of my schedule. I don’t have other people to think of. I can wake up at any time and not feel pressured to see everything. I move at my own pace and I prefer that. I am very much comfortable with my own company, so doing things by meself is enjoyable for me.
Solo travelling for me, years ago, was about being on my own and living in my own world, but I discovered that when you open yourself up, life will surprise you. I think it is when you are comfortable with yourself that you can be open. It is when you are happy with your own company that you can radiate positivity. People can sense that. So if you feel good about yourself then it will show.
I didn’t make this solo adventure to find myself because I already know who I am, but it is through this journey where I rediscovered a side of me that I’ve forgotten about.
As the plane lands back to my reality, everything looks the same as I left it,
I AM FOREVER CHANGED.
