Hyperrealist portraits by Korean artist HYUNG KOO KANG.
~

~
This exhibition focuses on Kang’s works over the last 10 years,
ranging from his popular personality portraits, spontaneous caricatures and sculptures to his haunting self-portraits.
~
~
His artworks may resemble a photograph, but these are not considered as photorealism.
Kang does not use pre-existing photographs to create the images, but rather primarily depends upon his imagination.
~
~
These larger than life portraits truly commands the viewer to stop, look and really see.
And with their burning gaze I feel them communicating to me.

My day in Paris usually starts in the afternoon.
It can vary from exploring different neighborhoods, to going to exhibitions, to meeting up with friends
or it could all happen in just one afternoon

Open Studio of my friend FLAVIA MEIRELES (Dancer-Brazil)
WHAT AM I HERE FOR?
I should be way past the tourist path and focus more on exploring the deep.
I am in a place surrounded by art and grounded by rich culture,
I should take more advantage of that.

My work should deepen…
I should deepen…
Away from my comfort zone,
I am personally battling ghosts I never thought existed.

Last year, I was deeply consumed working on the video installation on Consumption. When a friend watched it for the first time, he couldn’t believe I made it. I think he’s always seen me as the smiley one that creates colorful photo collages… And when he saw images on my video of sex, war and religion, he couldn’t believe that it came from me.

Have I gone to the dark side?
In a meeting with a French master photographer I learned that it is best to explore my life and my art more. To get to know the masters and discover the history of what I am doing now. To understand what happened in the past to face my future… I do what I do the only way I know how. I didn’t study art, I didn’t study photography and being here I realized I have sooooo much to learn…

Brought my art to the dark side ;p Collaborated with different artists/dancer/musicians. Put up a show on my own. Had my first video/performance.
Talked about what I do in 15 minutes for PechaKucha night.
Watched Wicked the musical and right after saw the Porn Idol (where men went full monty) in London, hahaha.
Went to my first big concert in Paris (Tori Amos).

Questions borrowed from ALASDOS.Tumblr
I’m not really a big fan of Takashi Murakami but I really like the characters he designed for the virtual OZ in Summer Wars. I saw the film here in Paris and watched it in Japanese with French subtitles
Well, apparently Murakami’s kawaii characters are back and it has invaded Chateau Versailles!
There’s a lot of talk about this exhibition and not all of it were good but it was enough to spark my interest. So from our weekend stay in Normandy we drove straight off to the chateau to catch the last day of the controversial exposition…
and look what greeted us inside the castle,
a larger than life colorful creature!
I just feel so giddy and happy to see all these dream-like creatures in this huge castle.
I feel like Alice in Murakami Wonderland!
“Off with his head!” cried the traditionalists to Murakami.
They felt it was inappropriate to put these modern artworks amidst the historic-classic beauty that is Versailles.
For me, I found the juxtaposition rather interesting.
I feel that the mix engages us in this dialogue where they complement each other and also disagrees.
The fusion of the old and the new
the blending of classic paintings and pop art
the mix of East and West
~
I believe that this is what the exhibit was all about…
It is not our first time here in the castle but this exposition was a good enough reason to come back. It gave us the chance to rediscover the place again, it felt like seeing everything with new eyes. I was always looking forward to discover what’s in the next room and it never failed to make me smile.
~
I thoroughly enjoyed the different textures and tastes presented here. When it comes to food, I love dipping fries in vanilla ice cream and eating soft pastry with crispy chips. And in a way, the mix of Murakami’s kitschy kawaii characters with the elegant Versailles background is like chocolate covered potato chips for me, it may be odd for some but it truly was yummy for me
~
In some ways I feel like this weird sculptures… Being here in Paris and feeling a bit out of place. In my first few months here I am looking for ways to connect, wanting to belong, yearning for a sense of community but then eventually I realized I could never blend in. Instead of trying to belong, I found myself looking in… inwardly this time and just try to do my own thing.
